About the game
What you do in a play session
Yōkai is a fast cooperative game (15‑35 minutes) for 2‑4 players that dives into Japanese mythology. The goal is to calm the confused spirits by silently grouping Yōkai of the same family before noise scares them away. Each round starts with a grid board where the Yōkai are randomly scattered. Players, unable to speak freely, must use limited gestures or signals to indicate where to move their pieces. The challenge lies in remembering each creature's location and coordinating moves to form correct clusters, all while avoiding making noise. The Communication Limits mechanic forces creative teamwork, while Grid Movement and Pattern Building provide the puzzle framework. Colorful, illustrated monster pieces aid memory. With a light weight (1.5/5), the game suits beginners or families looking for a thematic cooperative experience without heavy complexity. The game ends when all Yōkai are grouped or a mistake creates too much noise, resulting in a collective loss. Digital versions are available on Board Game Arena and Tabletopia, letting you play online. Yōkai blends fantasy, memory, and puzzle in a short, fun, and nervously quiet session, perfect for fans of Japanese themes and silent cooperation.
