About the game
What you do in a play session
In Backyardia, the Bug Council convenes to decide everything from picnics to tax reform. The game blends trick‑taking with a touch of mancala, creating a quirky insect politics vibe that hooks you. Each game runs in three rounds, with 11 cards per player. In the 10 tricks of each round, the leader starts by playing a suit, and the others follow with a card of that suit if they can. The highest card in the dominant suit wins the trick and the points. The player who played the lowest card of that suit visits the Council, picks a faction tile, collects strength cubes, and distributes them clockwise, shifting the power of suits for the next round. When the 10 tricks finish, the player uses the remaining card to claim allegiance to the faction matching the card’s suit. If you can manipulate the Council to your advantage, you can earn an allegiance bonus that adds to your trick score. After three rounds, the highest‑scoring player becomes Backyardia’s eternal leader. The game supports 1 to 5 players, lasts about 30 minutes, and has a medium weight of 2.15 on BGG, reflecting a balance between accessibility and depth. It also offers a solid solo experience, letting seasoned players test their skills without a group. Components are high quality, with well‑illustrated cards and sturdy faction tiles that give a nice tactile feel. The mancala mechanic is introduced intuitively, adding strategic layers without overwhelming the player, as suit strength changes each round. The pace is brisk, but every decision matters, demanding constant attention to card flow and cube placement. If you’re after a game that blends fun, strategy, and an unexpected insect theme, Bug Council of Backyardia delivers exactly that.
