Objective of the Game
Alright, listen up, future master thieves! In Burgle Bros., you and your crew are on a mission to pull off the ultimate heist. Your main goal is to successfully crack open all the safes on the top floor of a highly secured building and make your escape through the roof. It's a cooperative game, so you're all in this together – either you all escape with the loot, or you all end up in the slammer!
Preparation (Setup)
Let's get this operation ready! Here’s how to set up your high-stakes heist:
- Choose your Floor Plan: First things first, decide which building you're going to hit. The game comes with different floor plans, so pick one that suits your crew's experience level.
- Assemble the Building: Based on your chosen floor plan, lay out the tile cards face down to form the building's floors. Each floor will have a grid of these tiles. Make sure to leave space between floors for the walls.
- Place the Safes and Stairs: Locate the safe tokens and stair tokens. Place one safe token face down on each designated safe tile on the top floor. Place stair tokens face down on the designated stair tiles on each floor.
- Character Selection: Each player chooses a unique Burglar character. Each character has special abilities that will come in handy during the heist. Take your character board and any starting equipment or tokens associated with your character.
- Guard Placement: Place the guard tokens on their starting spaces as indicated by the chosen floor plan. These guys are your biggest problem, so know where they begin!
- Tool Deck: Shuffle the tool cards and place them face down to form the draw pile. These will be your lifelines, providing crucial advantages.
- Alarm Deck: Shuffle the alarm cards and place them face down. These cards dictate the guards' movements and other unfortunate events.
- Starting Player: Decide who goes first. The player who most recently broke a rule (minor offenses count!) is a good candidate for the starting player.
The Game Turn
A turn in Burgle Bros. is a tense dance between planning and reacting. Here’s how it generally flows:
- Player Turn: The active player can perform a series of actions. These actions usually involve moving around the building, trying to reveal new tiles, interacting with safes, or using tools. Remember, every move counts, and you want to be efficient!
- Revealing Tiles: When you move onto a face-down tile, you flip it over to reveal its contents. This could be a safe, a laser grid, a fingerprint scanner, or even a useful tool!
- Cracking Safes: Your main objective on each floor is to crack the safes. This usually involves a mini-game or a specific action sequence depending on the safe's type. Successfully cracking a safe will reveal its contents, which are often crucial for your escape.
- Guard Movement: After each player's turn, the guards move. This is determined by drawing an alarm card. The card will tell you which guard moves and how many spaces. Be careful, if a guard catches you in their line of sight, you're in trouble!
- Using Tools: Throughout the game, you'll acquire tool cards. These can be played at various times to help you overcome obstacles, disable alarms, or even manipulate guard movements. Knowing when to use your tools is key to success.
End of Game and Scoring
The game of Burgle Bros. has a clear win or lose condition, there's no "scoring" in the traditional sense:
- Victory Condition: You win the game cooperatively if all players successfully crack all the safes on the top floor and then escape through the roof access point. Congratulations, you've pulled off the heist!
- Loss Condition: You lose the game if any of the following happens:
- A guard catches any of your burglars and they are unable to escape.
- The alarm level reaches a critical point (usually indicated by a track on the board).
- You run out of time or certain resources, as specified by the chosen floor plan or specific event cards.
Tips for Winning
Alright, rookies, listen up! Here are a couple of pointers to help you avoid a trip to the big house:
- Communicate, Communicate, Communicate! This is a cooperative game, so talk to your teammates! Share information about revealed tiles, discuss guard movements, and plan your actions together. A coordinated team is a successful team.
- Manage Your Heat: Every action you take, especially loud ones like cracking safes, can increase the building's "heat" or alarm level. Keep an eye on this track and try to mitigate it when possible. Don't be reckless, or you'll quickly find yourself surrounded by guards.
- Know Your Burglar: Each character has unique abilities. Understand how your burglar's special skill can best contribute to the team's success. Whether it's disabling lasers, moving silently, or carrying extra tools, leverage your strengths!
