Our Verdict
RECOMMENDED

If you enjoyed Koryŏ, Chosŏn is the perfect choice, as it maintains the essence of the gameplay with an expanded setting and a touch of temporal intrigue. It's a fast-paced and strategic game, perfect for those who like direct interaction with opponents and need a dose of 'take that' at the table. Simultaneous action selection and set collection create a dynamic and twist-filled experience, ideal for casual games, but with enough depth to keep attention.

About the game

What you do in a play session

Get ready to dive into a universe where the Koryŏ dynasty has given way to Chosŏn, founded by General Yi, but peace didn't last long! Mysterious figures known as 'Watchers' have emerged, spreading discord and turning political disputes into full-blown armed warfare. It's even rumored that these 'Watchers' possess extraordinary powers, including the ability to travel through time! Chosŏn is the thematic sequel to Koryŏ, set in the same uchronian and political-steampunk universe, maintaining a similar gameplay that you already know and love.

Over eight intense rounds, each player draws cards and simultaneously chooses one of four play options: playing as many characters as desired from one family, one character from each of two different families, one character and one event card, or three event cards. Each family has a value from 1 to 9, which not only indicates the number of cards of that family in the deck but also the victory points it can yield at the end of the game. Cards are revealed clockwise, starting with the round's start player. If you played one character and one event, you can use the event's power to swap or eliminate characters held by other players. Furthermore, you activate the powers of the families you control – meaning those of which you hold more cards than any other player. These powers can be quite strategic, allowing you to protect families, keep event cards, double their effects, or even steal the first player token. At the end of each round, cards in play and in hand are discarded. After eight rounds, the final score is calculated based on controlled families, influence gained during the game, and possession of 'Yi's Legacy,' which is acquired by playing three event cards. The player with the highest score wins!
