About the game

What you do in a play session

Crawlout is a printable‑and‑play solo dungeon crawler that you can set up at home. The game comes with an 8‑bit deck of heroes, villains, obstacles, and items, plus a set of six‑sided dice. At the start, you pick three adventurers to form your party. The ones you don’t choose are kept in the deck and will appear as foes in later encounters. Then you draw cards until you have five enemies in your dungeon, keeping any items that surface.

The core mechanic is dice rolling. Each hero has abilities that require specific number combinations. You place the dice on the character you want to activate, and if the roll meets the requirement, the effect triggers. If not, the die stays “stuck” and can be used on another creature. This interaction of dice as workers adds a worker‑placement flavor, but with the randomness that only six‑sided dice can provide.

The game also blends RPG elements: you can recruit enemies, use items to heal or boost your abilities, and even acquire new cards that shift the dynamics of each session. At the end of each round you can “refill” the dungeon by shuffling remaining cards and adding fresh challenges. If you manage to defeat all foes and finish with all items, the adventure ends and you win.

Crawlout is perfect for fans of quick solo challenges with a splash of 8‑bit nostalgia. Printing and assembling are straightforward, making it a fun DIY project. The main drawback is its reliance on dice: without them the game loses its core identity. Overall, it’s a light yet engaging experience that marries dice‑based strategy, worker placement, and RPG decision‑making into a compact package.
