Step by step

1. Game Objective

In Dominion: Prosperity, the central theme is wealth and the expansion of your kingdom. Your goal is to build the most valuable deck possible by accumulating Treasure cards and Victory cards. You are competing to have the most prosperous kingdom, which is measured by the victory points accumulated at the end of the game. Victory is secured by the player who possesses the highest total score when the game ends.

2. Setup

To play this expansion, you will need the basic cards (Treasures, Victory, Curses) and the rules from the base Dominion game. Follow these steps:

  • Choosing Cards: Select 10 Kingdom card sets. If you choose the random method, shuffle the Randomizer Cards from this expansion with those from other Dominion games you are using.
  • Additional Basic Cards: Prosperity introduces Colony and Platinum cards. They are always used together. If any chosen Kingdom card is from Prosperity, include Colony and Platinum in the Supply.
  • Quantities: Use 8 Colony cards for 2-player games, or 12 for 3 or more players. Use all 12 Platinum cards, regardless of the number of players.
  • Tokens: Make the 1-point and 5-point tokens available. They are not limited; if you run out, use substitutes.

3. Game Flow

The game progresses in individual turns. Each turn consists of two main phases, performed in this order:

  1. Action Phase: The player may play Action cards from their hand, following the instructions on them.
  2. Buy Phase: The player plays Treasure cards from their hand to generate coins and buy cards from the Supply.

After the buy phase, the player discards all played cards and those remaining in their hand, drawing 5 new cards for the next turn. The game proceeds to the next player on the left.

4. Actions and How to Play

Action and Treasure cards have specific abilities that alter the flow of the game:

  • Treasure Cards: These are played during the Buy Phase. You may play as many treasures as you wish, in any order, or choose not to play some. Once a card is bought, you can no longer play treasures.
  • Tokens: Some cards grant point tokens. They are taken from the pile of unused tokens and count as points at the end of the game. Any player may count the tokens of others.
  • Kingdom Cards: Each card has unique rules (such as Anvil, Bank, Bishop, etc.). For example, the Bank generates +1 coin for each Treasure in play (including itself). The Bishop allows you and other players to discard cards to gain Victory tokens.
  • Restrictions: Some cards, such as Grand Market, have specific conditions for being bought (e.g., not having Copper in play).

5. End of Game and Scoring

The game ends at the end of any turn if one of the following conditions is met:

  • The Province supply pile is empty;
  • Any 3 supply piles are empty (or 4 piles in 5 to 6-player games);
  • The Colony supply pile is empty.

At the end, players sum the points of all Victory cards in their deck (including Colonies) and add the total value of their Point Tokens. The player with the highest score wins.

6. Tips for Winning

  • Order of Treasures: The order in which you play your Treasures matters. Cards like the Bank only count the treasures already in play at the moment they are activated, so plan your sequence to maximize coin gain.
  • Buy Management: Remember that once a purchase is made, you can no longer play treasures. Ensure you have played all the treasures you intended to before acquiring your card from the Supply.
  • Use of Tokens: Cards that grant Victory tokens, such as the Monument or the Bishop, are valuable ways to score without relying exclusively on the Victory cards in your deck.
