Downspin is a head‑to‑head strategy duel played on a vertical panel fitted with five interlocking knobs. Each player receives a set of colored discs numbered 1 through 5, which are dropped into chutes at the top of the panel. On your turn you twist one of the knobs, sending your disc downward, but the twist is that the same knob works differently on the opponent’s side: a move that advances your piece may simultaneously push or hinder his. The goal is to be the first to get all your discs to the bottom in ascending order, or to force your rival to break the sequence. The game blends rapid thinking, cause‑and‑effect calculation and a dash of psychology, as you must anticipate how each rotation will affect the other side. Rules include several variants that tweak the win condition or add penalties, keeping the experience fresh. With a playtime of roughly 30 minutes, the pace is brisk and the learning curve low, though mastering the gear interactions takes practice. The physical design—real gears and knobs—offers a tactile feel rare among abstract games, and being a two‑player‑only title makes it ideal for casual duels or club competitions. Victory demands watching the board, planning two moves ahead, and sometimes taking a seemingly bad twist that later flips the game in your favor. In short, Downspin delivers a mechanical puzzle, a race, and a psychological showdown in a compact, elegant package, even earning a Mensa Select award in 1994.
