About the game

What you do in a play session

If you thought the world was already dangerous in Eldritch Horror, get ready, because Masks of Nyarlathotep cranks up the desperation. In this expansion, the threat isn't just a giant sleeping monster, but the Messenger of the Outer Gods—the only malevolent entity that actively walks among us, disguised in various guises. The goal here is to hunt cults scattered across the globe that, while appearing to worship different gods, are all serving the same manipulative master.

The biggest leap in this expansion is the introduction of the Campaign mode. Instead of standalone games, you now experience a continuous saga where your decisions carry weight and consequences echo between sessions. To make it even more immersive, each investigator gets Personal Stories. This means your character isn't just another pawn on the board, but someone with their own motivations, traumas, and goals that might clash with the main mission. Will you save the world or get lost in your own demons?

Beyond the deepened narrative, there are new Mystic Ruins to explore and fresh adventures that will test your group's sanity. The cooperative dynamic remains strong: you'll need total coordination to take down the sects and prevent Nyarlathotep from opening the Ultimate Gate. If he succeeds, well... let's just say humanity will have bigger problems than a Monday morning caffeine craving. This is the definitive expansion for those who love the Lovecraftian atmosphere and want to turn the game into a true tabletop RPG experience, but with the structure of a modern board game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

5 questions
Do I need the base game to play?
Yes! This is an expansion. You must own Eldritch Horror to play Masks of Nyarlathotep.
How long does a session last?
Prepare for long journeys. Games range from 2 to 4 hours, and since it's a campaign, you'll spend many hours in total.
Is it hard to learn?
If you know the base game, the curve is smooth. If you're new, the BGG weight of 3/5 indicates it's an expert game, so set aside time to read the new rules.
How many people can play?
From 1 to 8 players. You can play solo or with a huge group, though coordination gets more chaotic with more people.
What changes in the experience compared to the base game?
The biggest difference is continuity. Now, actions from one game affect the next, and characters evolve narratively.
