Imagine yourself as a music mogul trying to dominate the market of classic recording artists. In Evergreen, the gameplay is all about timing and speculation. Created by the duo Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling, the game features a curious dynamic: you use numbered cards to attempt to take control of famous singers. The clever detail lies in how these artists are represented: they are vintage 45 RPM vinyl discs with a central dial that fluctuates between values 5 and 12. Every time an artist is transferred from one player to another, the dial rotates. The goal is simple yet tense: you want to acquire an artist when their value is at its peak, or, if you hold a devalued artist, pass them to another player to force a devaluation while you get rid of the liability. Scoring occurs when you decide to put on concerts at the end of your turn, including a gala show that doubles the points. An interesting trivia is that the designers developed the game via fax and phone without ever meeting in person, which might explain the peculiar nature of the experience. To keep things frantic, the game uses a sand timer, forcing you to make quick decisions under pressure. It is a 'tug-of-war' style game where patience and cunning in rotating the discs' values define who becomes the music tycoon. If you enjoy games where asset values shift constantly and player interaction is direct and competitive, Evergreen offers this fast-paced, cerebral challenge.
