About the game
What you do in a play session
Foundations of Metropolis puts you in the shoes of an ambitious architect, competing over three rounds to turn empty lots into an impressive skyline. Each player purchases deeds to parcels via Dutch auctions, paying the price that drops and then places polyomino tiles representing buildings. Larger, more complex structures occupy more lots but generate more prestige – the victory currency of the game. Prestige comes from both the number of completed buildings and their sophistication, and the player with the most at the end of the three phases is crowned Grand Architect.
The board is a square grid where players fit their polyominoes like a city puzzle. The land market offers varied options, and the income system ensures that owners of more properties receive revenue each round, enabling further purchases. Ownership creates a race for strategic zones, while the market keeps the supply of lots flowing.
High‑quality components, including colorful polyomino pieces and deed cards, give the game a clean, easy‑to‑read look. The rules are simple enough for newcomers, yet the need to plan optimal building placement and manage money adds strategic depth. Playtime is about an hour, making it perfect for 2–4 players who enjoy economic and city‑building games without excessive complexity. If you love building cities, making quick bids, and watching your skyline grow, Foundations of Metropolis delivers charm and strategy in a well‑balanced package.
