About the game

What you do in a play session

In 'Gorbachev: The Fall of Communism', you take the reins of the Soviet Union during the tumultuous years of 1985 to 1991. Forget traditional wargames with map-based troop movements; here, you are managing a crumbling system under immense pressure, navigating the collapse of socialism and the erratic mood swings of Mikhail Gorbachev himself. As a title in the 'States of Siege' series, the gameplay is intense: five converging tracks represent the political awakening of various regions and the Communist Party, all heading straight for Moscow. If any of these markers reach the capital, the game ends in a military coup.

The core of the game is the management of 'Efforts'. You must balance the Soviet economy, media, and culture while dealing with card draws that dictate which fronts are advancing against you. The catch? You never have enough resources. To gain more Efforts, you must make morally questionable and strategically risky choices: call in the KGB, gamble away your army in Afghanistan, or trade nuclear missiles in disarmament deals. Each of these maneuvers might give you the breathing room needed to keep the Politburo in check, but they can also cost you precious victory points in the long run. Even your relationship with the US, influenced by the 1988 presidential election, plays a critical role.

It is a game that demands constant prioritization. Will you abandon your Warsaw Pact allies to gain Western goodwill and a few more actions? Or will you try to hold the Union together, risking an internal coup? The game excels at simulating the 'short blanket' dilemma faced by Soviet leaders at the time. With a quick playtime of 30 to 60 minutes, it serves as an interactive history lesson that doesn't take itself too seriously but severely punishes poor planning. If you enjoy solo challenges that blend politics, history, and constant crisis management, Gorbachev is a compact, intense experience that puts the weight of the world squarely on your shoulders.
