About the game
What you do in a play session
Hanami transports you to a blossom‑filled picnic, whether in Japan's countryside parks or Tokyo's urban green spaces. Each player controls a set of tiles that act as picnic blankets; the number of pips on a tile shows the group's strength, while the icon indicates the preferred activity – viewing sakura, eating onigiri, or enjoying lantern-lit evenings. The goal is to surround Activity Tokens with your tiles, but only if your tile strength exceeds any rival's in that area, allowing you to claim those tokens. At game end, the player with the most Victory Tokens for each activity scores the highest total and wins. The game revisits Reiner Knizia's classic Samurai mechanics, offering two distinct boards: a Japan map that follows the original rule set, and a Tokyo map that adds new abilities, tiles, and challenges. Decisions revolve around hex‑grid area control, hand management (choosing which tiles to play), tile placement, and set collection of activity tokens. For 2–4 players, a match lasts 30–60 minutes and carries a light weight (2/5), making it perfect for fans of abstract strategy who prefer minimal luck. The components are vivid and thematic, reinforcing the spring‑time Japanese vibe. Hanami blends charming aesthetics, elegant rules, and multiple strategic paths, delivering replay value on both the classic and urban scenarios.
