About the game

What you do in a play session

At the turn of the 18th century the night sky was still a vast unknown. Herschels puts you and up to three friends in the shoes of budding astronomers guided by Caroline Lucretia Herschel and her brother William. The game arrives in a tabloid‑style newspaper, with the rules and board printed on the very pages, but you’ll also need a pencil, pen, ruler and a standard deck of cards to play. Each round begins with two revealed cards: one shows the coordinate on the Celestial Map where you may draw a line, the other determines which actions are available – discovering stars, planets, comets, or drawing constellations. Completing missions grants extra actions and the chance to name celestial bodies, earning Prestige Points. After eight rounds the player with the most prestige wins. The drawing and paper‑and‑pencil mechanics give a tactile, almost artistic feel, while pattern building on constellations adds the strategic depth typical of abstract games. Playtime ranges from 40 to 80 minutes depending on player count (2‑4) and rule familiarity. Scoring a 9 on BGG and ranked 6 on Ludopedia, Herschels blends historic theme, old‑paper aesthetic and simple yet deep mechanics, perfect for fans of non‑traditional board setups who love to flex their creativity.
