About the game

What you do in a play session

In the winter of 453, the Hunnic Empire reigns supreme over much of the known world, but the Great Khan is ailing, and many ambitious generals dream of taking his place. In Huns, you are one of these generals, seeking to prove your worth to become the Khan's successor. The game combines dice drafting with resource and card management, all set within this universe of mighty warriors.

Each turn, you choose between two main actions: raiding for resources or taking cards with special abilities. The game features five distinct colored card decks, representing equipment, raids, mercenaries, curses, and treasures, as well as goods cubes in the same five colors. At the start of each round, the active player rolls five three-sided dice (d3), one of each color. Then, they choose one die and decide whether to take cubes or cards of that color. If choosing cards, they draw 1 to 3 (depending on the die roll), keep one, and place the others face down under the deck. Equipment offers ongoing bonuses, raids have one-time effects, treasures grant end-game points if their conditions are met, mercenaries provide reusable effects once paid with goods, and curses are played on opponents, who must spend goods to dispel them. If choosing cubes, you can use them to pay mercenaries, remove curses, or fill your wagons, which require specific colors. Upon completing a wagon, you draw a new one. Players take turns choosing a die until all are used. The game ends when one cube color or one card deck is depleted. Points are tallied for raids undertaken, treasures collected, mercenaries paid off, and wagons delivered, and whoever has the most points becomes the new Khan!

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

6 questions
Is Huns a very complex game for beginners?
Not at all! It has a light complexity (BGG weight 2.08/5), making it super accessible. The rules are easy to pick up, but the choices offer depth for those seeking more strategy.
What is the average duration of a Huns game?
Games are quite fast, usually between 30 and 45 minutes. Perfect for a shorter gaming session or to fit in multiple plays back-to-back!
How many players does Huns support?
Huns is designed for 2 to 4 players. It works well at all player counts, but the dynamic changes a bit with more people at the table, leading to more contention for dice and cards.
Does the game involve a lot of luck due to the dice?
The dice rolling does introduce an element of randomness, yes, but the open drafting (dice drafting) mechanic allows you to mitigate that luck. You always have interesting choices, even with a 'bad' roll, and can adapt to build your combos.
Are there any expansions available for Huns?
Currently, Huns does not have any official expansions released. The base game already offers plenty of replayability with its various cards and strategies.
What is the main focus of the game: combat, strategy, or item collection?
The main focus is a mix of strategy and item collection. You are constantly managing resources and cards to build combos and score points, without direct player-versus-player combat.
