About the game

What you do in a play session

Hey board game enthusiasts! Get ready for an intense historical journey with *Imperial Elegy: The Road to the Great War 1850-1920*. This is a strategic, multi-player card-driven wargame that throws you right into the political and military cauldron that preceded World War I. Here, you won't just be moving pieces; you'll be shaping the destiny of one of the six great powers of the era: Germany/Prussia, the United Kingdom, France, Austria/Austria-Hungary, Russia, or the Ottoman Empire. Every decision matters, every alliance can be the key to victory or the spark of a global conflict. The game unfolds over seven main turns, each representing a crucial decade. But, if the Great War erupts (and let's be honest, the chances are high!), the game can extend for up to six additional, shorter turns, focused on the conflict itself. During each turn, players take turns in impulses, using action cards to activate Command Points or unleash powerful events. With these resources, you'll colonize distant territories, negotiate diplomatic treaties, wage bloody wars, and, of course, sabotage your rivals. The turn only ends when all players consecutively pass or run out of cards. Italy, should it unify, joins the fray with special rules but is not directly controlled by a player. Although designed for six strategists, *Imperial Elegy* works very well with fewer players, and yes, it has a polished solo mode for you to test your skills. Victory can come in different forms: by fulfilling your individual National Goals and accumulating Victory Points, or, if the Great War breaks out, the victory conditions change dramatically. And keep an eye out for an Auto-Victory, which can be triggered if you control a specific number of key territories. It's a dense game, with a lot of historical and strategic depth, perfect for those who enjoy diving headfirst into complex simulations.
