About the game

What you do in a play session

In the Shadow of the Emperor places you at the heart of the Holy Roman Empire’s court, where four aristocratic families vie for the throne. Each player controls a set of characters, knights, and cities, and must carefully decide where to spend their limited action points. The goal is to secure the seven electors, each with a unique ability, and accumulate enough votes to be elected. The area majority mechanic makes controlling strategic territories essential, while voting determines who truly wins the crown. Throughout the game, characters age and die, restricting action options and forcing players to plan ahead. The blend of tactical action, voting, and resource removal creates a constant tension. The game lasts 90 minutes, supports 2 to 4 players, and was released in 2004, receiving solid ratings on BGG and Ludopedia. If you enjoy strategy games that demand careful planning and influence competition, In the Shadow of the Emperor offers an engaging and challenging experience.
