About the game
What you do in a play session
In 632 AD the Byzantine Empire is the last ember of the once‑mighty Roman Empire, still reeling after a protracted war with Persia. Both great powers are exhausted, but the real shock comes from the south: in the Arabian deserts Muhammad unites tribes under Islam and launches the early caliphate expansion. Byzantium drops you into this historic whirlwind, letting you play as the Byzantine emperor, the Muslim commanders, or a shrewd player trying to profit from the conflict. Each game blends worker placement, area majority, dice rolling and point‑to‑point movement. You station agents in cities, forts and trade routes to recruit troops, collect taxes and gain regional influence. Victory isn’t just about territory; each player has a secret personal‑victory goal that can be earned through military conquest, area control or diplomatic success. The large, detailed board covers the eastern Mediterranean and parts of Asia, and the wooden pieces and colored tokens bring armies, merchants and religious leaders to life. Area‑majority mechanics turn every region into a constant tug‑of‑war, while dice add risk to battles and political decisions. Playtime ranges from two to three hours for two to four players, with a moderate weight (3.4/5), perfect for those who enjoy deep strategy without overwhelming rulebooks. If you love games that mix war, diplomacy and resource management, Byzantium delivers a tense, historically‑rich experience where each round can reshape an empire.
