About the game
What you do in a play session
In Kantara: Spirits of the Forest, you lead a village striving for prosperity within a magical forest, but be warned: nature doesn't take kindly to unchecked exploitation! The game revolves around gathering essential resources like wood, meat, water, and leaves from a shared central grid. The key challenge is finding the right balance. If you're too greedy and harvest without restraint, 'Bad Karma' accumulates, and you certainly don't want to awaken the Spirit of the Forest prematurely.
The core gameplay focuses on hand management and strategic actions. On your turn, you can harvest cards from the grid, take risks in the black market to gain more resources — which generates more Karma — or return items to the forest to cleanse your spirit. Additionally, you can trade resources with opponents, creating interesting negotiation opportunities. Your ultimate goal is to complete village cards, which provide permanent production and help clear your Karma.
The game builds to a tense climax once the Karma pool runs dry. This triggers Phase 2: the Spirit awakens, a curse modifies the board, and a countdown begins. What makes Kantara unique is its final elimination round. Scoring points isn't enough; if you hold the most Bad Karma or have completed the fewest villages, you are eliminated from contention. It's a race against time and your own greed. If you enjoy games that blend resource management with a dash of 'take that' and constant end-game pressure, Kantara will fit perfectly into your collection. It’s an experience that demands a cool head, as every collection decision could be the step toward victory or your early elimination.
