About the game

What you do in a play session

Get ready to dive into the chaos of the American Revolution with Liberty or Death, the fifth volume of GMT's acclaimed COIN series. Here, you aren't just moving counters on a map; you're managing the political and military tension of a nation's birth. The game pits four factions in a deeply asymmetric conflict: the British, attempting to suppress the insurrection; the Patriots, fighting for liberty; the Indians, striving to protect their lands; and the French, who arrive to complicate the British position with funding and naval power.

The experience is rich and complex. As the British, you have the advantage of the sea and Tory support, but you can't be everywhere at once. The Patriots start weak, needing to rabble-rouse the population and train Continentals to face the regulars. The Indians play a dangerous game of alliances and rapid raids, while the French act as the 'thorn in the side' of the British, funding the revolt and blockading ports.

At the heart of the game are the cards, which integrate economics, culture, and warfare. You'll have to decide whether to use a card for troop movement or to execute a 'Brilliant Stroke'—genius moves by leaders like Washington or Clinton that can shift the tide of the game. With over 110 cards, scenarios of varying lengths, and a combat system blending dice and strategy, the game simulates the fragility of alliances and the brutality of guerrilla warfare. If you love wargames where politics weigh as much as cannons, this title is for you. And if you're on your own? The solo system is robust, allowing you to command the revolution by yourself.

Absolutely! It features an excellent solo system and flowcharts to help simulate the other factions.
How long does a game take?
It varies. There are short scenarios, but a full campaign can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours.
Do I need fluent English to play?
Yes, language dependency is high due to the amount of text on the 110+ cards and in the rulebook.
