About the game
What you do in a play session
Lowlands puts you in the boots of a farmer battling the rising tide of the North Sea. Each game starts with two sheep, a tiny pasture and plenty of empty space to turn into fields, lakes or buildings. You gather resource cards – wood, stone, wool – and spend them to expand your land, place fences, feed sheep or erect structures that grant victory points and improve farm efficiency. At the same time, there is a cooperative element: a communal dike protects everyone from floods. You can send workers to help build the dike, advancing the dike track and earning extra points if the barrier holds. If the dike breaks, breach tokens can penalize your final score. The challenge lies in balancing focus on your own farm with the need to contribute to the dike. Every action costs action points, so deciding whether to place a worker on a pasture or on the dike becomes a repeated tactical choice over a 50‑100 minute playtime. Terrain tiles are placed freely, allowing countless farm layouts; you may prioritize pastures to breed more sheep or invest in buildings like feeding troughs, which double pasture capacity, or lake cabins that boost the value of adjacent spaces. Unpredictable weather adds flood tokens each round; with enough dike sections your farm stays safe, otherwise you may lose part of your flock. In the end, the player who best balances personal profit and communal effort wins. The game blends resource management, worker placement and tile placement, wrapped in an agricultural theme set in the Netherlands.
