About the game

What you do in a play session

In Lying Pirates, you're a pirate captain with a very untrustworthy crew — your dice! Each round has three thrilling phases: in the Betting phase, you bluff like poker with dice, trying to fool other captains. In the Sailing phase, the loser stays behind while others advance on the modular board, facing events that could be treasures or traps. In the Action phase, use special cards to attack rivals, defend your ship, or upgrade your crew. The game ends when someone crosses the finish line, but there might be a final showdown to decide the true pirate king! With variable mechanics and unique player powers, every game is a different adventure in the Caribbean of deceit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

7 questions
How many players is it best with?
Best with 4-6, but works well even with 2 (though less chaotic).
Is it hard to learn?
Not at all — rules are simple, but mastering the bluffing takes time. Great for beginners to deception games.
Does it need much translation?
Yes, some cards and events have text. You can play with a printed translation sheet.
How long does a game take?
Between 30-90 minutes, depending on player count and how much backstabbing happens along the way.
Are there expansions?
Yes, one expansion adds 2 more players and new events, but the base game is already complete.
Can kids play?
Ages 10+ if they're OK with bluffing and some 'take that' between players.
Worth it if I already own Liar's Dice?
Absolutely! Adds depth and a much more immersive pirate theme.
