Madeira is a heavyweight strategy game that puts you at the heart of Portuguese colonization in the 15th century. You take control of one of the island’s three capitals – Funchal, Machico, or Porto Santo – and aim to turn fertile lands into true agricultural empires. In the beginning, wheat plantations are your sole lifeline, but as the game progresses, sugar and eventually the famed Madeira wine become the products that truly make a difference in the global market. To succeed, you must place workers on buildings that generate resources, roll dice to determine production, and use area influence mechanics to dominate sectors of the island. The colonial theme mixes with economic challenges: sugar demand drops when other countries enter the market, and you must adapt production to keep revenue flowing. Additionally, the Portuguese crown offers missions that, when completed, grant prestige points – but timing is everything: acting too early may yield insufficient points, acting too late may let rivals take the best opportunities. The game also allows shipbuilding, opening trade routes and expeditions to new lands. The blend of worker placement, dice rolling, and area control creates a tense, intense experience where every choice can be costly. If you enjoy resource planning, economic management, and a dash of luck, Madeira will keep you glued to the table for 60 to 150 minutes with 2 to 4 players. Get ready to manage wheat scarcity, money inflation, and the constant threat of piracy while trying to win the crown’s favor!
