Get ready for a delightful and strategic adventure deep within an ancient forest with Morels, a card game exclusively for two players! Here, you and your opponent take on the role of seasoned mushroom foragers, scouring every nook and cranny in search of the most flavorful and valuable varieties. But make no mistake, the forest hides its secrets, and the competition is fierce for who will take home the best harvest.
Morels uses two distinct decks to simulate the foraging experience: the Day Deck, with 84 cards packed with ten different types of mushrooms, plus useful items like baskets, cider, butter, and pans; and the smaller Night Deck, with 8 special mushroom cards to be found under the moonlight. Each mushroom card has two values: one for selling and one for cooking. Selling two or more identical mushrooms earns you 'foraging sticks,' which expand your options in the forest (the tableau of eight face-up cards on the table), allowing for offensive or defensive plays that change with each game. Cooking sets of three or more identical mushrooms – using butter or cider if the set is large enough – grants essential points for victory.
But beware! Poisonous mushrooms can ruin your harvest, and the hand-size limit demands shrewd management at every turn. Card selection is a crucial decision, as each round, a card from the forest moves into a decay pile, available for only a short time. The Day Deck then refills the forest, simulating a continuous walk where some delicacies are picked up, others are passed by, and many more are yet to be discovered. With simple mechanics but full of tactical decisions, Morels promises fun and flavorful duels!
