About the game
What you do in a play session
Municipium transports players to the height of the Roman Empire, around the 2nd century AD, when the Pax Romana still held. Each participant controls an aristocratic family and tries to place their members in the city's key buildings – such as the Temple, the Basilica, the Emporium and the Arena – to win the support of four citizen groups: scholars, merchants, soldiers and priests. The goal is to become the most influential family by the end of the game, using a mix of physical presence, institution control, and the favor of the prefect.
The board is divided into distinct areas; whoever holds the majority in an area gains that institution's special ability, which can be activated only once per game. Meanwhile, the prefect moves around the map, and families with the most influence in the visited areas receive extra bonuses. Member movement is point‑to‑point, demanding careful route planning and timing. Throughout the game, players also collect sets of citizen cards that score victory points at the end.
With straightforward rules and a playtime of about an hour, Municipium blends area‑control strategy with tactical decisions about when to fire unique powers. The components are modest, but the artwork captures the Roman atmosphere with architecture and period costumes. Perfect for those who enjoy light, historic‑themed games and love battling for influence without heavy math.
