About the game
What you do in a play session
Mystery Rummy: Jekyll & Hyde is a rummy‑style card game that pits the two faces of Stevenson’s classic story against each other. Each card belongs to one of three suits: J (Jekyll), H (Hyde) or J/H, which counts for both. The game starts with the "identity card" showing Jekyll; when a player plays one of the three potion cards (the so‑called gavels), the identity card is flipped to Hyde and the player draws two extra cards. This identity flip dictates which suits may be melded at that moment – only combinations matching the currently visible side are legal.
Play proceeds like classic rummy: draw, discard and form melds of five cards, aiming to empty your hand. The twist lies in scoring: melds that match the current identity side score double, and if all your melds match, you shut the opponent out for a clean win. In addition to the potion cards, there is a third gavel, “work in lab,” which lets you draw three cards from the deck and keep one that matches the active identity, or take the top discard if it fits. When a player goes out, the round ends, cards left in hand count as negative points, and scores are tallied.
Designed for exactly two players, about 45 minutes, and with a light learning curve (BGG weight 1.5), the game is ideal for anyone who enjoys a strategic duel with a narrative spice. The flipping identity card creates tension in the final turns, as a single potion can turn a valuable meld into nothing or, conversely, double its worth. If you love traditional rummy but crave a bit of suspense and story, Jekyll & Hyde delivers without over‑complicating the rules. It’s the third entry in the Mystery Rummy series, keeping the core mechanics while adding the identity layer that makes each play feel fresh.
