In Nevada City, you and your family move to the Old West to establish a homestead and help the small town flourish. The goal is to outperform other settlers by building the most prosperous property and contributing to the town's growth. Each player starts with a nuclear family – mother, father, daughter, and son – and a personal homestead mat where they can develop farms, raise livestock, and operate silver mines. Initially, you already own a mine, a farm, a ranch, some money, and various commodities. The town evolves over four years of gameplay, with new buildings becoming available for construction each passing year. Each year consists of several turns, continuing until all players' characters and hired workers have been used. On each turn, you choose one of your characters to perform actions, but be careful: a character cannot repeat the same action within the same turn. Actions include buying new properties, working your own mines, farms, or ranches, claiming or constructing buildings, using existing structures, or reserving and fulfilling contracts aimed at improving the city. Each character and worker has unique skills that can optimize these actions, such as finding more silver or speeding up constructions. You earn victory points by constructing buildings and collecting fees when other players use them, as well as by completing contracts, whose value varies depending on the buildings present in the city. At the start of the game, each player receives a secret goal card, scoring based on their relative performance compared to other players. Annual events, such as droughts or fertile lands, add a touch of unpredictability. At the end of each year, hired workers leave unless they are married into a family, which requires specific resources. Advanced rules bring even more depth, with additional buildings and events, a gambling mini-game, a more volatile production market, and even extra sons and daughters. And to keep the excitement going, unhired workers can cause trouble at the end of the year, requiring you to use your gunslinging abilities to avoid injury and the loss of character abilities in the subsequent year.
