About the game

What you do in a play session

Have you ever heard the legend of the Jade Emperor's Great Race? The Chinese Zodiac didn't just appear out of thin air! Legend says that to organize time and name the years, the Emperor summoned all animals for an epic race to the Heavenly Palace. In Race for the Chinese Zodiac, you don't just hear this story; you live it. Each player takes on the role of a zodiac animal, each with their own special powers, and must race against time—and other players—to secure their place in history.

The game is a clever blend of racing and resource management. You start with a hand of action cards numbered 1-8, plus energy cards and karma tokens. Each round, everyone picks an action card and an energy card, revealing them simultaneously. This is where it gets interesting: if you play a card with a lower value than your previous one, you have to spend your precious karma tokens. In other words, planning your sequence is vital so you don't run dry when things get intense.

In the center of the table, there's a dual-layered action wheel that determines the efficiency of your actions. It rotates every round, shifting the game's rules and forcing you to adapt your strategy on the fly. The goal? Be the first to finish the race. It's a game that requires a balance between being aggressive to move forward and being cautious enough not to exhaust your resources too early. With playtimes ranging from 40 to 70 minutes, it's perfect for a group that enjoys mid-weight games with high interaction and the constant tension of guessing what your friends will do next. If you like mythological themes with a tight simultaneous action selection mechanic, this one is a must-play!
