About the game
What you do in a play session
Riff Raff is a dexterity game that puts each player in the shoes of a pirate trying to unload cargo onto a wooden ship that sways in every direction. Every player gets eight wooden pieces – barrels, crates, rats and sailors – and a deck of ten cards numbered 1 to 10, each matching a zone on the deck and the yardarms. At the start of each round, everyone secretly selects a card and reveals it simultaneously; the highest card decides who places a piece first, and the used card is removed from the game. The player then drops any piece they like onto the indicated zone. If the weight becomes unbalanced, the ship rocks and pieces may fall off. Any piece caught as it falls is removed from the game; uncaught pieces stay in the player’s discard pile, increasing the load they still need to get rid of. The goal is to be the first to discard all your pieces. If no one empties their hand before the cards run out, the winner is the player with the fewest pieces left. The game mixes the physical tension of balancing 3‑D wooden components with the strategy of choosing the best card to control turn order. The wooden pieces feel solid, while the game box itself serves as the ship’s hull, making the setup visually fun and highly interactive. Best for 2‑4 players, a round lasts about 30 minutes, rules are simple, and the weight is a modest 1.2/5, making it perfect for parties, casual game nights, or as a warm‑up for longer sessions. While the game is light‑hearted, it does demand quick reflexes and a steady hand, which can be a hurdle for newcomers to dexterity games.
