About the game
What you do in a play session
Salerno '43 plunges you into the Allied invasion of Italy in September 1943, putting you in command of British and American divisions landing in the Bay of Salerno. On the other side, the powerful German 16th Panzer Division, reinforced by five more mechanized divisions, is ready to defend the territory. The game captures the tension of the first eight days, where the survival of the Allied beachhead is at stake. Emergency measures, such as reinforcing the 82nd Airborne Division, are crucial to maintaining the position. While the Germans retreat on the left flank to avoid being surrounded, the right flank fiercely resists, preventing the British from advancing to Naples. Salerno '43 uses the same map, units, and time scale as Normandy '44, allowing for a fascinating comparison between the two invasions. With a modified game system and a smaller map, it's easier to learn and play than its predecessor. The game includes two scenarios: an 8-turn invasion scenario, perfect for an afternoon of play, and a 24-turn campaign, where the Allies need to reach the north edge of the map by the end of September 1943, while the Germans try to buy time to build the Gustav Line. The detailed simulation and deep strategy make Salerno '43 an engaging experience for wargame fans.
