Pack your bags, because Santa Cruz is taking you on a colonization adventure in a stunning, yet unpredictable, setting! In this game, you play as an explorer attempting to establish settlements across a beautiful archipelago. The real kicker here is that the game is split into two completely independent rounds. This means your performance in the first half sets the stage for the second, but don't panic: if your first round is a total disaster, you get a fresh start to redeem yourself!
The board is a mystery waiting to be uncovered. With face-down tiles, you'll explore the three islands to find the perfect spots for your houses, churches, and lighthouses. But a word of warning: the central volcano is the real boss here. If it decides to erupt, the magma could wipe out your most valuable buildings. It's a classic 'risk vs. reward' scenario. You can aim for those high-value spots near the volcano, but you'll have to face the uncertainty of an eruption that could cost you everything.
To manage your expedition, you'll use a hand of cards that alternates between travel cards (to expand your territory) and scoring cards (to ensure your resources and buildings yield maximum points). It's a game of hand management and strategic movement where every choice matters. If you enjoy exploration games with a dash of unpredictability and a 'econd chance' mechanic, Santa Cruz is your next destination. Just remember to bring a shield... just in case of lava!
