About the game

What you do in a play session

Tongiaki: Journey into the Unknown is an exploration and nautical adventure game that puts you in the shoes of a Polynesian explorer in 300 AD. You and your friends start on the island of Tonga, but overcrowding will soon force you to set sail in search of new lands. The game uniquely blends tile placement, point-to-point movement, and area influence mechanics. Each expedition is a risk: you might discover a paradise island like Tahiti or Fiji... or end up adrift at sea. The goal is to spread your tribe across valuable islands to score points, but beware: having more pawns on an island doesn't guarantee an advantage. The game has a touch of cooperation (you'll need to join forces for some expeditions) and competition (you're allowed to sabotage others to steal points). The hexagonal tiles with wavy edges are a charming touch, giving the feeling of actually sailing through unknown seas. It's easy to learn, but the strategic decisions can be deeper than they first appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

5 questions
How many players can play?
2 to 6 players. Works well at all counts, but gets more chaotic (and fun) with more people.
How long does a game take?
About 45 minutes on average. May vary depending on player count and how many expeditions fail!
Is it hard to learn?
Not at all! The rules are simple, but strategic decisions can be deep. Great for both beginners and veterans.
Is there a lot of luck involved?
Yes and no. Expeditions have a random element, but planning routes and managing your pawns reduces the risk.
Is it good for cooperative game fans?
Only if you don't mind competition. There are forced cooperation moments, but it's ultimately every tribe for themselves.
