About the game

What you do in a play session

Ever dreamed of being the ultimate space mining tycoon? In Starship Merchants, the galaxy is peaceful, but the hunger for resources like rare Ice-9, crystallized cobalt, and precious deuterium is insatiable. You take charge of a fledgling corporation with a simple goal: explore, mine, and turn a bigger profit than your rivals. The game is structured around a business cycle that moves through four distinct quadrants on the board. The mechanics are quite clever: you can either perform an action in your current quadrant or advance to the next, meaning players spread out across the board while managing their individual business cycles. The game is divided into four main areas: the Shipyard, where you buy better ships; the Market, to purchase gear, hire pilots, and invest in refineries; the Belt, where you spend energy to explore and mine; and the Docks, where the magic happens and you trade your hard-earned cargo for credits. Energy management is vital, and knowing when to invest in faster ships or top-tier refineries can determine who becomes the king of the sector. The game ends when a player reaches 100+ credits and decides to trigger the 'Final Run'. It’s that tense moment where everyone scrambles to optimize their final turns. Ultimately, the player with the most credits wins. It’s a solid pick-up and deliver experience with a dash of economic speculation, perfect for those who enjoy planning routes and watching their empire grow while navigating the stars. If you enjoy space economy games that don't get bogged down in excessive complexity and focus on logistics strategy, Starship Merchants is a solid choice for your table.
