Hey everyone! Ready for another interplanetary adventure? In Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, we step into the shoes of a space corporation CEO with the mission to transform Mars into a habitable (and, of course, very profitable!) place. The game is straightforward: invest your megacredits in project cards that will give a boost to the terraforming process. The more you contribute to global parameters – like oxygen, temperature, and oceans – the higher your Terraform Rating (TR) climbs, which means more income and, ultimately, more victory points (VPs).

The cool part is that each round is a surprise! Players choose one of five available phases, and that phase will set the pace for the round. It might be time to build new projects, activate special actions, collect resources, or research to draw more cards. The stroke of genius? Everyone participates in all selected phases, and whoever chose the phase gets a special bonus. And to keep things dynamic, everyone plays simultaneously within each phase! The central board is where the magic happens, with tracks for oxygen, temperature, and TR, plus spaces for the ocean tiles. The game ends when Mars is breathable, with oceans and temperature ideal for life. Whoever has the most VPs wins and is crowned the greatest terraformer of Mars!

What's the main difference between Ares Expedition and the original Terraforming Mars?
Ares Expedition focuses more on cards and a simultaneous phase selection mechanic, making the game quicker with less downtime between turns. It's a more 'card-driven' and agile version.
How many players can participate, and what's the average game duration?
The game can be played by 1 to 4 players. The average duration ranges from 45 to 60 minutes, which is significantly faster than the base Terraforming Mars game.
Is it a complex game? What's the difficulty level?
It's considered a medium-complexity game (BGG weight 2.92/5). While it has strategic depth, the rules are more accessible than the original, and simultaneity streamlines the flow.
Do I need to know the original Terraforming Mars to play Ares Expedition?
Not at all! Ares Expedition is a standalone game. Knowing the Terraforming Mars universe might enhance immersion, but the mechanics are different enough for it to be a fresh experience.
What are the main components of the game?
The game comes with a central board, scoring tracks, markers, ocean tiles, and, of course, many project and corporation cards, which are the heart of the game.
Who is this game recommended for?
It's ideal for those who already enjoy engine-building games, science fiction fans, and especially for those who like Terraforming Mars but are looking for a faster version with less waiting time between turns.
