About the game
What you do in a play session
Prepare for a deep dive into the reign of King David, covering 35 years of struggle for supremacy in the Fertile Crescent! In 'The Campaigns of King David', you'll immerse yourself in a unique system blending economics, diplomacy, and military operations to recreate the biblical saga. With a full-color map of the Near East at your disposal, you'll command combat units and leaders, maneuvering them strategically to achieve victory conditions, typically involving control of key cities. The game is structured into 7 turns, each with 5 distinct phases. Four of these phases are quick: initiative determination, diplomacy, drawing action chits, and checking victory conditions. The fifth phase, 'Phases', is where the real action unfolds, featuring 12 possible actions. These actions are drawn randomly, with some revealed to hint at what's coming, while others remain hidden, adding a layer of uncertainty and surprise to each round. You'll need to manage your resources wisely to maintain your armies, build and equip new units, fortify cities, and wage battles using leaders commanding everything from chariots to phalanxes and militias. Each nation has its own tailored victory conditions, reflecting its historical situation, ensuring a balanced challenge. Game length varies significantly: from 3 hours for two players to up to 5-6 hours for five. Will Judah expand its empire under the guidance of a great king, or will it crumble before Philistia, Aram, and Egypt? The fate is in your hands!
