About the game
What you do in a play session
Hellenes: Campaigns of the Peloponnesian War puts you in command of Athens or Sparta during the epic conflict that defined Ancient Greece. Designed by Craig Besinque (of the EuroFront series), this two-player wargame uses an adapted version of the Hammer of the Scots system, ensuring dynamic matches full of strategic decisions. One player takes Athens' naval might, while the other commands Sparta's land forces – and both must secure allies among minor city-states and barbarian tribes, who might switch sides as the war progresses. Cards drive your military actions and special events like revolts, plagues, or civil strife, but beware: each card can only be used for one purpose at a time! Besieging walled cities is crucial, but if the enemy breaks the siege, you lose prestige – and in the end, that’s what decides the war. The map spans from the Peloponnese to Sicily, with units like hoplites, cavalry, and naval fleets. Four historical scenarios offer varying lengths and challenges, perfect for those who want depth without endless playtime.
