About the game

What you do in a play session

In The Great City of Rome, you step into the shoes of a talented architect tasked by the Emperor to rebuild the Eternal City. Over the course of 14 rounds, you must balance drafting, resource management, and spatial planning to create the most impressive city grid. The core of the game is a clever drafting system: at the start of each round, you choose your proximity to the Emperor. Being closer lets you pick your desired building card earlier, but you receive fewer resources (bricks and cogs) in exchange. It is a constant tug-of-war between priority and economy.

Your city is built on a 4x4 grid, and placement is everything. You must place new buildings adjacent to existing ones, carefully planning your layout to maximize the benefits of your production actions. If you find yourself short on bricks, you can spend coins to compensate, though money is tight and better saved for other strategic needs. Beyond just building, you must trigger your city's production to score and gain influence tokens. These tokens are vital for grabbing special influence cards that appear throughout the game, rewarding those who plan their influence gathering cycles correctly.

Despite its accessible ruleset, the game offers a satisfying layer of depth. You are constantly managing a limited supply of resources while trying to fit your 4x4 puzzle together. By the end of the 14th round, points are tallied from residential buildings, temples, aqueducts, and your influence standing. It is a tight, rewarding experience that punishes poor planning but feels incredibly satisfying when your engine clicks into place. If you enjoy city-building games that prioritize smart decision-making and spatial efficiency over complex, convoluted mechanics, The Great City of Rome is a fantastic addition to your table, offering a tense yet rewarding challenge in every session.

How long does a game take?
It is quite snappy and usually lasts about 60 minutes, making it perfect for those who want a strategic experience without spending all night on it.
Does it play well with 2 players?
Yes! With 2 players, each person places two figures on the action strip, allowing for two full turns per round, which keeps the game balanced and competitive.
Is it difficult to learn?
Not at all, it has a weight of 2.25/5. The rules are intuitive and the flow is clear, making it great for casual gamers looking for a bit more strategy.
Does it rely heavily on luck?
The game is focused on planning and resource management. While the draft depends on available cards, winning comes down to how well you optimize your 4x4 grid.

You can pay 2 coins for each missing brick. It is a good safety net, but be careful—money is tight!
