About the game
What you do in a play session
The Scepter of Zavandor puts you in the shoes of a young wizard who has just uncovered ancient arcane knowledge. Your goal? Rise to the rank of archmage, represented by the legendary Scepter of Zavandor. To achieve this, you will enchant gems, gather knowledge, and assemble a force of magical artifacts and sentinels. Each round features an auction phase where players compete for these powerful items using resources that increase over time. Hand management is key: deciding when to play a spell or hold a card for later can shift the turn order, which is based on stats like power or influence.
The board includes tech trees that let you evolve abilities, while sets of gems, artifacts, and sentinels grant victory points when activated. With a "catch the leader" mechanic, the player in front feels pressure from others to close the gap, creating exciting races. Player elimination is also present, so those who run out of resources may be forced out before the end. The rules are moderate in complexity (weight 3.5/5) and a game runs about 90 minutes for 2‑6 players. If you enjoy games that blend economics, set collection, and asymmetric powers, The Scepter of Zavandor delivers a strategic experience full of interaction and tasty take‑that moments.
