Hey board game enthusiasts! Ready for a card game classic that blends strategy, bluffing, and tons of team interaction? Tichu is a partnership climbing game where the goal is to get rid of your cards as quickly as possible, preferably scoring big points along the way. The game uses one or two standard 52-card decks, but with a special twist: four unique cards – the Dog, Phoenix, Dragon, and Mah Jong (the 1) – which add extra layers of strategy and twists.
On your turn, you can either play a stronger card combination than the current one (think single cards, pairs, sequences of pairs, full houses, and so on) or simply pass. If everyone passes back to the player who played the last combination, that person wins the trick, clears the cards, and starts the next one. The lead card of each trick determines the type of combination that can be played – if a single card is led, only single cards are valid; if it's a seven-card straight, only seven-card straights can be played.
But the real kicker is the bidding! At the start of each round, before playing any card, you can shout "Tichu!". This means you're confident you'll be the first to empty your hand. If you succeed, your team scores 100 points; if you fail, you lose 100 points. And for the truly daring, after seeing your first eight cards, you can call "Grand Tichu!" for a 200-point bonus (or penalty). The first team to reach 1,000 points wins. It's a game that, despite its simple rules, offers strategic depth that will keep you hooked for hours!

How many players does Tichu accommodate, and what's the best setup?
Tichu is flexible for 3 to 10 players, but it truly shines in 4-player teams. The partnership dynamic is at the heart of the game and works perfectly with two against two.
What is the average duration of a Tichu game?
A full game of Tichu can range from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on player experience and how intense the rounds are. It's a great length for an engaging gaming session.
Is Tichu a complex game to learn?
The basic rules are quite simple and easy to grasp, but the strategic depth and nuances of the special cards take time to master. It's the kind of game that's 'easy to learn, difficult to master'.
What are the special cards and what do they do?
Tichu has four special cards: the Mah Jong (the 1), which allows you to call a suit; the Dog, which swaps your hand with your partner's; the Phoenix, a wild card worth points; and the Dragon, the strongest card, also worth points but with a cost.
What is the main objective in Tichu?
The main objective is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards in each round. Additionally, teams aim to accumulate points through played cards and, especially, through 'Tichu' and 'Grand Tichu' bids.
Is Tichu a game that relies heavily on luck?
Like any card game, there's an element of luck in the initial deal. However, hand management, communication with your partner, and strategic decisions about when to bid and which combinations to play are far more decisive for victory.
Who is Tichu most recommended for?
Tichu is highly recommended for those who love trick-taking and climbing card games with a strong component of teamwork and bluffing. If you enjoy games that reward long-term strategy and reading opponents, you'll love it!
