About the game
What you do in a play session
To Jack & Back takes the classic straight (A‑2‑3‑4‑5) and turns it into a two‑way sprint using every card in the deck twice – once ascending, once descending – with the two jacks acting as bookends at each end. On their turn, each player drops a card from their hand onto a central discard pile that is up to three values higher or lower than the previously played card, suits don’t matter. When the sequence reaches a jack, the direction flips and play proceeds the other way, creating a back‑and‑forth between the two jacks. The first player to empty their hand wins.
But there’s more nuance: if you can’t play a legal card you draw one and add it to your hand; when a jack is reached, the player who lands on it must draw two extra cards, adding a penalty. Special cards like “skip‑seven”, direction‑changing aces, wild jokers, and the option to play again under certain conditions further spice things up. These twists make a game that can finish in five minutes or stretch into an evening, depending on the group size (2‑6) and how long you want to keep the fun going. Easy to learn, quick to play, and packed with little strategic choices, To Jack & Back is ideal for fans of light, fast‑paced card games that still keep you thinking.
