About the game

What you do in a play session

Ubongo! Junior captures the frantic fun of the original Ubongo, but shrinks the pieces and rules for younger players. Each participant starts with nine colorful animal tiles and a stack of seven puzzle boards. The boards show squares that must be covered by two or three tiles, depending on the chosen difficulty. At the start of a round everyone flips their board, spots the needed tiles and races to fit them before the sand timer runs out. The first to finish shouts "Ubongo!", flips the timer and grabs the first handful of gems from a bag – two to four gems, based on player count. The next finishers still have a chance to earn gems, but each subsequent player receives one fewer gem. After seven rounds, the player with the most gems wins. A 20‑minute game for 2‑4 players, with a light weight of 1.5, it’s perfect for quick family sessions or kids' parties. Components are bright and tactile: animal‑themed wooden or plastic tiles, paper puzzle boards, sand timers and a bag of sparkling gems. The fast pace and visual appeal help children develop pattern recognition, hand‑eye coordination and spatial thinking while shouting and competing. More players mean more gems in circulation and higher timer pressure, upping the excitement. The game scales easily – choose the easier boards for beginners and raise the difficulty as they improve. In short, Ubongo! Junior is a real‑time puzzle that blends light strategy, speed, and plenty of laughs, making it an ideal, educational, high‑energy pick for anyone craving a quick, fun challenge.
