Step by step
Game Objective
In UNO Masters of the Universe, your goal is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards in each round. By doing so, you earn points for the cards left in your opponents' hands. Points are accumulated over the rounds, and the first player to reach a total of 500 points is declared the winner!
Preparation (Setup)
- Each player draws a card. The player who draws the card with the highest number will be the card dealer. Cards with symbols count as zero for this purpose.
- The player who will deal the cards must shuffle the complete deck of 112 cards.
- Then, the dealer deals 7 cards to each player.
- The remaining cards should be placed face down in the center of the table to form the DRAW PILE.
- The first card from the DRAW PILE is turned face up and placed next to it, starting the DISCARD PILE.
- NOTE: If the first card turned over for the DISCARD PILE is an Action Card (with a symbol), the special instructions for that card must be consulted in the ACTION CARD FUNCTIONS section.
Game Flow
The game progresses in turns, starting with the person to the left of the dealer.
- On your turn, you need to play a card from your hand that matches the card on top of the DISCARD PILE.
- The match can be made by:
- Number (e.g., a blue 7 over a red 7).
- Color (e.g., a blue 7 over a blue 3).
- Symbol (for Action Cards, e.g., a blue Skip Card over a red Skip Card).
- Optionally, you can discard a Wild Card at any time, even if you have other matching cards.
- If you don't have a card that matches the one on top of the DISCARD PILE, you must draw a card from the DRAW PILE.
- If the card you drew can be discarded (i.e., it matches the card on top of the DISCARD PILE), you can discard it in the same round.
- Otherwise, your turn ends, and it will be the next player's turn.
- You can also choose NOT to discard a matching card, even if you have one. If you do this, you will need to draw a card from the DRAW PILE.
- If the drawn card matches, it can be discarded in the same round.
- However, if you choose to draw a card, you cannot discard any other card from your hand after drawing from the DRAW PILE, even if you previously had a matching card.
Actions and How to Play
Card Types
- Number Cards (0 to 9): These are the basic cards of the game, available in blue, red, green, and purple. They must be matched by number or color.
- Draw Two Cards:
- Action: The next player must draw 2 cards from the DRAW PILE and loses their turn.
- Discard: Can only be discarded over a matching color or another Draw Two Card.
- Start of Game: If it's the first card turned over, the same rule applies to the first player.
- Reverse Cards:
- Action: Reverses the direction of play (if it was clockwise, it changes to counter-clockwise and vice-versa).
- Discard: Can only be discarded over a matching color or another Reverse Card.
- Start of Game: If it's the first card turned over, the dealer plays first and the game continues clockwise.
- Skip Cards:
- Action: The next player loses their turn.
- Discard: Can only be discarded over a matching color or another Skip Card.
- Start of Game: If it's the first card turned over, the player to the left of the dealer loses their turn, and the game continues with the next player.
- Wild Cards:
- Action: You can choose the color that must be played next (any color, including the color that was in play before the discard).
- Discard: Can be discarded on your turn, even if you have another card that matches the card on the DISCARD PILE.
- Start of Game: If it's the first card turned over, the person to the left of the dealer chooses the color with which the game should continue.
- Wild Draw 4 Cards:
- Action: You choose the color to be played. Additionally, the next player must draw 4 cards from the DRAW PILE and loses their turn.
- Discard Restriction: Can only be discarded when you DO NOT have another card that matches the COLOR on the DISCARD PILE. However, it can be discarded if you have a card with a matching number or an Action Card.
- Start of Game: If it's the first card turned over, it must be placed in the middle of the DRAW PILE and another card must be turned over.
- Challenge: If you suspect a player played this card dishonestly (having a card of the corresponding color), you can challenge them.
- The challenged player must show their cards.
- If they cheated, they draw 4 cards instead of you.
- If they didn't cheat, you draw the 4 cards, PLUS 2 additional (total of 6 cards).
- Wild Powers of Greyskull Cards:
- Action: When discarding, you must hold it above your head and say: "BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL... I HAVE THE POWER!". All other players must draw three cards from the DRAW PILE. The game continues in the current order.
- Color Choice: This card is also a wild card, so you can choose the color that will continue the play.
- Start of Game: If it's the first card turned over, the person next to the card dealer chooses the color that will start the game.
End of Game and Scoring
End of Round
When a player discards their second-to-last card, they need to shout "UNO" to indicate they only have one card left. If they don't shout "UNO" and someone notices before the next player starts to play, they must draw two cards from the DRAW PILE.
The round ends when a player has no more cards. Points are scored and a new round begins.
If the last card discarded is a Draw Two card or a Wild Draw Four card, the next player must draw 2 or 4 cards from the DRAW PILE, respectively. These cards will be counted in the score.
If the DRAW PILE runs out and no player has run out of cards, the DISCARD PILE is shuffled and used as the new DRAW PILE for the game to continue.
Scoring
The first player to run out of cards receives points from each opponent's remaining cards, as follows:
- All number cards (0 to 9): The face value of the card.
- Draw Two Cards: 20 points.
- Reverse Cards: 20 points.
- Skip Cards: 20 points.
- Wild Cards: 50 points.
- Wild Draw 4 Cards: 50 points.
- Wild Powers of Greyskull Cards: 50 points.
Round points are accumulated. The first player to reach 500 points is the winner.
Tips for Winning
- Try to get rid of your highest-scoring cards (the Action Cards and Wild Cards) as quickly as possible, as they are worth many points if they remain in your hand at the end of the round.
- Use Action Cards strategically to disrupt your opponents, making them draw more cards, lose a turn, or changing the direction of play to your advantage.
- Be sure to shout "UNO" when discarding your second-to-last card, to avoid having to draw two additional cards as a penalty.
