About the game
What you do in a play session
In 1566, Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette laid the foundations for what would become Malta's capital. In Valletta, each player takes on the role of an ambitious builder inspired by Valette, aiming to recreate the city by securing raw materials, hiring merchants, bricklayers and roofers, and erecting massive bastions, baroque edifices, and right‑angled streets. The game centers on constructing a deck‑bag‑pool that represents resources and workers; each round you draw cards, manage your hand, and decide which pieces to place on the modular board. Because the board layout changes every game, placement strategy is never static. As you progress, you cultivate contacts with the Order of Malta, boosting your reputation and earning useful bonuses. Valette himself acts as a building inspector: his patrol across the board serves as a timer—when his route ends, the game stops and the player with the best mix of buildings, reputation and resources wins. The "take that" mechanic lets you hinder opponents, for instance by blocking a worksite or stealing a worker. With a light weight (2.3/5) and a playtime of 40‑80 minutes, Valletta is approachable for families and casual groups, yet the depth of resource management and urban planning will satisfy seasoned gamers who love a solid historical challenge. In short, Valletta offers a Renaissance‑themed city‑building experience that blends hand management, deck building and direct interaction on a ever‑changing board.
