About the game

What you do in a play session

Way Out West is a classic western-themed game that puts you and your friends in the boots of cattle barons competing for control of frontier towns. Forget diplomacy: the core of the game is strategically placing your cowboys, building infrastructure, and ensuring your cattle operations are profitable. The game shines through its aggressive player interaction; if you don't like how things are unfolding, you can simply initiate a gunfight, rob banks, or sabotage rivals with pesky farmers.

The gameplay revolves around bidding for turn order and carefully selecting actions. Since actions are limited, whoever acts first sets the pace. You'll need to manage your cowboys to move cattle, build hotels, stores, railroads, and jails, each providing specific bonuses that can swing the game in your favor. Tension spikes during gunfights, where the outcome depends on the number of cowboys at the location and a bit of dice luck. It's a punishing system where every lost cowboy hits your wallet and final score.

The game is scored over specific rounds, with income payouts based on your town influence. Having a train in a town boosts your cattle value, but if a rival farmer is present, profits drop significantly. Victory goes to the player who best balances territorial expansion, cash flow, and notoriety (the 'Wanted Counters'). It's a constant back-and-forth experience where long-term planning must coexist with the need to react to opponents' betrayals. If you enjoy thematic games where interaction is direct and the Wild West atmosphere is palpable, Way Out West offers a table full of twists and tough decisions.
