About the game

What you do in a play session

We Are the Word is a breezy cooperative game that puts one player in the guesser’s seat while the rest become clue‑givers. Each round starts with a secret target word that the guesser must uncover. The other players simultaneously write down a single word as a clue – no phrases, just one term. The twist is that if two people think of the same clue, it cannot be revealed, forcing the group to be original and coordinated. Once all clues are shown, the guesser gets a few seconds to scan the set and try to name the hidden word. A correct guess advances the team; a miss costs a life. Play continues until all words are solved or lives run out.

Designed for 3‑7 players, a typical game lasts about 20 minutes, making it perfect for casual get‑togethers or as a palate cleanser between heavier titles. The “duplicate clues don’t count” rule sparks funny, tense moments as the group balances creativity with diversity. The pattern‑recognition mechanic is straightforward: simply look at the clues and spot the pattern pointing to the secret word. With only word cards, pads, and pens required, there’s no bulky board or pricey components. Its ultra‑low complexity (weight 1/5) welcomes anyone, even those new to board games. In short, We Are the Word offers collaborative fun, quick thinking, and plenty of chatter, all packed into a portable format that fits in any party bag.
