Game Objective
In Welcome to the Moon, players compete to conquer the Moon to ensure the survival of humanity. This is an evolving and narrative flip & write game consisting of 8 different Adventures with increasing difficulty. Players can play these Adventures independently or successively as a complete story. The goal is to earn the most points by completing Missions and optimizing their Adventure sheets. In Campaign mode, the player with the most stars at the end of the campaign is the winner.
Preparation (Setup)
- Each player takes one dry-erase marker and the Adventure sheet corresponding to the chosen game.
- Select the Mission cards for the chosen Adventure. Pick 3 cards: one Mission A card, one Mission B card, and one Mission C card. Place them face up (mission initiated side) in the middle of the table.
- Shuffle the Starship cards and split them into 3 equal draw piles in the middle of the table, number side face up.
Game Flow
The game is played in successive turns. Each turn consists of the following 6 phases:
- Flip 3 Starship cards: The top card of each draw pile is flipped to the action side. When a draw pile is exhausted, shuffle its discard pile to form a new draw pile.
- Pick a number/action combination: Players simultaneously pick one of the three available combinations. Multiple players may pick the same combination.
- Write down a number (Compulsory): The player must write the number of the chosen combination in an empty space of the marking area of their Adventure sheet. Numbers in each zone must be placed in ascending order. A number cannot appear twice in the same zone.
- Use the action (Optional): The player may use the action associated with the combination, provided they have filled a space on their sheet with that combination's number.
- If a player can write down at least one of the 3 available numbers, they must pick that combination.
- If no numbers can be written, the player must cross off one System Error box (from top to bottom) and cannot perform any action.
- Incidents: Resolve any effects or consequences triggered during the specific Adventure.
- Accomplish a mission (Optional): The first players to fulfill a mission's requirements in the same turn accomplish it and write the highest value of the Mission card on their sheet. The card is then flipped to the "mission accomplished" side. Subsequent players to complete the same mission receive its lowest value. Each mission can only be accomplished once per player.
Actions and How to Play
While the way actions are used varies by Adventure, the 6 general actions are:
- Robot action: Used to connect, build, cut, or explore different parts depending on the Adventure.
- Water and Plant actions: Used to collect resources and earn points or bonuses, but only if the number is written in specific spaces on the Adventure sheet.
- Energy action: Allows the player to improve other actions or their values.
- Astronaut action: Allows the player to modify the value of the chosen combination's number by adding or subtracting -2, -1, 0, 1, or 2 before writing it down (minimum value is 0; maximum can reach 17). Some Adventures provide additional bonuses for this action.
- Planning action: Allows the player to fill in an additional space on the same turn by writing an X in an empty space. Some Adventures may apply penalties or bonuses for this.
End of Game and Scoring
End Game Triggers
The game ends at the end of a turn if any player has:
- Accomplished all three Missions.
- Crossed off all System Error boxes on their sheet.
- Filled in all spaces of the marking area on their sheet with numbers or X.
Scoring
The winner is the player with the most points, calculated as follows:
- Add points from accomplished missions.
- Add points for each scoring field (such as Water, Plants, etc.).
- Subtract points for System Errors: subtract the first visible value from the total (or, for the first Adventure, subtract the sum of all System Errors).
Tie-breaking: The player with the fewest System Error boxes crossed off wins. If still tied, the victory is shared.
Tips for Winning
- Manage System Errors: Be careful with System Error boxes, as they act as penalty points at the end of the game.
- Prioritize Missions: Aim to be the first to fulfill mission requirements to secure the highest value of the Mission card.
