About the game
What you do in a play session
Between 230 and 221 BC, the youthful Qin king Ying Zheng unified China by conquering the so‑called Warring States (Zhanguo). As the first emperor, Qin Shi Huang Di reorganized the empire: he split it into prefectures, standardized writing, laws, currency and measures, and ordered the construction of the legendary Great Wall to fend off the northern Xiongnu. In ZhanGuo each player becomes an imperial envoy tasked with aiding this unification. Over five rounds you receive a handful of cards and must choose where to play them – on your personal board to gain personal power, or on the shared board to recruit labor, build projects (like the Wall or the Terracotta Army), call Qin reinforcements and move armies between kingdoms. The goal is to earn the emperor’s greatest favor, but beware: hoarding power or exploiting workers can spark popular discontent and trigger uprisings in newly annexed lands. Balancing influence, construction and area control is key. The game blends hand management, area majority/influence, and a national‑scale map that evolves as projects progress. With multi‑use cards, a detailed China map and thematic components, ZhanGuo offers an immersive historical experience where every decision impacts both your score and the empire’s stability. Perfect for fans of influence‑driven strategies who want depth without overwhelming complexity, and who enjoy feeling the weight of political choices in ancient China.
