About the game
What you do in a play session
Every summer, the charming town of Águeda in Portugal turns into an art festival where colorful umbrellas hang over the streets and lamp posts become works of art. On the table, players take on the role of artists in this festival: each tries to decorate their own street with as many umbrellas as possible, drawing tourists who want to buy souvenirs and photos. But the art isn’t just aesthetic: each umbrella you place unlocks a new section of your tourist map, bringing more visitors into your pool. When the street is complete, scoring comes from two sources – the traditional point count for lines of umbrellas and the “Shop” cards, which call for specific color or pattern combinations. The game blends three classic mechanics: pattern building (you create sequences of umbrellas that fit your street), tile placement (each umbrella must be placed in the right spot), and worker placement (you decide who places the tile, who moves a tourist, etc.). With 1 to 5 players and a 20‑40 minute run time, the game is quick, colorful, and competitive, yet still requires strategic thinking to decide when to put a simple umbrella or sacrifice a space for a more valuable color combo. Components are solid: umbrella cards, tourist miniatures, a player street board, and shop cards. If you love pattern‑building games with an artistic flair and want something fun for the family but still challenging, Águeda: City of Umbrellas is a great pick. The only caveat: the theme can feel a bit repetitive for those who’ve played many pattern‑building games, so be ready to repeat the experience across sessions.
