About the game

What you do in a play session

Gridcannon is a solitaire card game that turns your deck into a battlefield of royal eliminations. Designed by Tom Francis and Chris Thursten in 2019, it uses a standard deck with jokers. The core mechanic involves a 3x3 grid of number cards and 12 royal cards (kings, queens, jacks) placed around it. Your goal is to 'assassinate' all royals by strategically using the grid and payload system. To attack a royal, you place a card opposite it (triggering the cannon's charge) and use the two cards between them as payload to deal damage. Payloads must match the queen's color and king's suit (except jacks, which accept any suit). Aces and jokers add special twists, like resetting the grid or skipping rules. It's a solo game, perfect for solo play, but the clever mechanics make it feel like a secret royal heist. The challenge lies in combining payloads creatively, but the rules are easy to grasp. If you enjoy strategic card games with a dash of humor, Gridcannon is a must-try. Plus, using traditional cards adds a retro charm that fits any setting. The only 'drawback' is getting too deep into payload combinations, but that's where the fun really starts!
