In Archipelago, you play as a Renaissance power hunting for riches in the Pacific or Caribbean. The board starts blank, and each round you expand the map by placing hex tiles that reveal new islands, resources, and opportunities. While exploring, you gather wood, gold, tobacco, and other goods, which you can use to build markets, ports, cities, and temples or sell on the internal and external markets. The real fun comes from negotiation: players trade, make deals, hold auctions, and even bribe each other for advantage. And don’t forget the natives – if you neglect them, they can rebel and wipe out everyone’s progress. The game blends auction, commodity speculation, worker placement, and tile placement mechanics on a modular board that changes every game, keeping replayability high. Three sets of objectives let you choose short, medium, or long games, and a solo expansion means you can explore on your own. If you love diplomacy, trade, and a dash of betrayal, Archipelago is for you.
Game time ranges from 30 to 240 minutes depending on the objective length, and it works well for 2 to 5 players. Complexity is intermediate, but the learning curve is gentle thanks to clear rules and a variety of actions to choose each turn.
