Imagine that you and your rival are medieval master masons with a single mission: to erect the most glorious cathedral in the region. The catch? You have to work on the same construction site, but each of you wants to take all the credit. In Basilica, the construction happens through the placement of colored tiles that define the temple's layout. The challenge is that you aren't just solving a puzzle; you are fighting for territory. The goal is to create the largest possible areas of single colors and ensure your workers (foremen, masons, and carpenters) dominate these spaces.
The strategy here is tight. You can use a tile to expand the cathedral, but each piece also offers a special action. Want to move your workers? Want to promote them to make them more valuable? Or perhaps manipulate the structure? If you choose the action, that tile is excluded from the construction. And be careful: whatever you ignore in the open draft becomes a feast for your opponent, so every choice is a calculated risk.
The game's pace is dictated by a King pawn moving along the scoring track. When he reaches certain spaces, a 'Royal Visit' occurs. This is the moment when the work is assessed, and whoever controls the largest areas earns the points. It's an architectural game of chess where resource management and reading your opponent are fundamental. If you enjoy influence games with a hint of malice and rigorous planning, Basilica is your masterpiece. It's worth noting that the 2022 reissue already includes the expansion, making the experience even more robust.
